What is the Flipped Classroom?


The flipped classroom refers to a model of learning that rearranges how time is spent both in and out of class to shift the ownership of learning from the educators to the students. In the flipped classroom model, valuable class time is devoted to higher cognitive, more active, project-based learning where students work together to solve local or global challenges — or other real-world applications — to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Rather than the instructor using class time to dispense information, that work is done by each student after class, and could take the form of watching video lectures, listening to podcasts, perusing enhanced e-book content, or collaborating with peers in online communities. Students access the online tools and resources any time they need them. Faculty can then devote more time to interacting with each individual. After class, students manage the content they use, the pace and style of learning, and the ways in which they demonstrate their knowledge; the instructor adapts instructional and collaborative approaches to suit their learning needs and personal learning journeys.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • Flipped learning is showing some really promising results even with schools in difficult circumstances. Flipped learning - combined with personalized learning analytics - enables teachers to cluster students into groups based on their understanding / difficulties with a topic.   • 'Flipped' is not an either/or - some of the best instances of flipped learning I've seen effectively integrate flipped and non-flipped components, sometimes almost simultaneously.   • - kevin-johnson kevin-johnson Apr 12, 2016I have used flipped instruction during library period for Junior High level students in the past years, for us this is grades 6 through 8. I have seen very useful application by some of the key pioneers in the high school Chemistry classroom. I also know of a Tokyo early childhood school director who has developed an extensive online YouTube channel that the teachers have integrated fully into use, but this success is contingent upon the classroom teachers conscientiously monitoring the student progress and use; in this, they also get the support of parents who sign-off on the "flipped" homework.   • I will suggest a hard approach to the question, which is this: In order for education to evolve into a more learner-centered model that supports creativity, collaboration, inquiry, and other digital age skills, traditional content delivery needs to flip entirely. If students are to experience a digital age learning environment AND also have time for other things like extra-curricular activities, friends, and family, instructional content needs to be available online to support differentiated learning pathways. In this sense, flipping is not an option, it's necessary in order to free up time for students and teachers to pursue higher-level activities. Further, flipping encourages students to advocate for themselves by independently structuring their learning pathway...finding and reviewing information when they need it, etc., which is the same way that many of us as professionals - I research information on my own, then spend my time with others synthesizing, planning, and implementing. - brandon.olszewski brandon.olszewski Apr 25, 2016

  • - kevin-johnson kevin-johnson Apr 12, 2016Harvard and MIT via Edx and other internal platforms have been trialing this for a few years now; the potential of using the rich data online (flipped) learning generates, L. Rafael Reif, the President of MIT sees as a key future theater that will generate useful educational research data. Dr. Reif's impression of just over one year ago was that MOOCs (the Edx form of flipped instruction) represent the most important educational advent since the printing press.

  • The concept of curatorship. The best flipped learning pathways are expertly curated by teachers to provide students with the learning they need in the way that they need it. Also, flipped learning is inherently empowering for the learning - it forces the learner to make sense of a syllabus, prepare for activities and projects via content review, and bring a spirit of collaboration and creativity to class.   • Impacts that have been seen in schools we are working with are:
    • More motivated students due to more social and interactive classroom experience
    • Higher rates of homework completion due to the social effect - students who are lagging in understanding are pushed by peers who did do their flipped homework when in the classroom the next day

  • The flipped approach moves the classroom 'economy' from knowledge exchange to the experience economy (ala Dewey). That is, knowledge exchange can take place outside the formal classroom and the classroom can be dedicated to providing meaningful experiences that motivate and excite students.- dezuanni dezuanni Apr 12, 2016
  • - kevin-johnson kevin-johnson Apr 12, 2016In my own use, and in my experience, I know it can add strength to teaching from Kindergarten to university; like all educational tactics, it needs to be skillfully deployed for the best return. It can open up the classroom in the ways described in the introductory descriptor, and therefore may improve learning and allow more creative classroom work.
  • Impacts of flipping learning have been evident in graduate/seminar programs for decades: students leave class, review material, assemble notes, synthesize thoughts, then come to class prepared to discuss, brainstorm, create, and debate. This experience is much more engaging for students than traditional teacher-driven content delivery instruction, although requires students to study on their own to be prepared. - brandon.olszewski brandon.olszewski Apr 25, 2016
