What is Online Learning?

Online learning refers to both formal and informal educational opportunities that take place through the web. This topic experienced a surge of interest with the rise of massive open online courses in 2012, and has since been garnering greater acceptance as a mode of learning that can complement face-to-face instruction in blended learning approaches — or stand on its own. As leaders have gained a better understanding of this field, they have been conducting numerous related online learning experiments; educators are becoming more comfortable testing various levels of integration in their existing courses, and many believe that online learning can be an effective catalyst for thoughtful discussion on all pedagogical practice. Indeed, online learning is undergoing a sea change, with every dimension of the process open for reconceptualization.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • - kevin-johnson kevin-johnson Mar 31, 2016I think MOOCs are already good for learning content, but require English ability and the maturity to work independently, so are best suited for Junior High, or more likely High School aged students. EdX has had High School MOOCs out for more than one year now They still seem heavy on Math, AP, Physics, and Coding (new this year), and very limited on the Humanities courses, but this is a great tool for young learners. Khan Academy is also great in these areas and getting better all the time.

  • I don't think MOOCs are dead, not at all, however they will be modified to something new, at least on the K-12 market. The need to self-paced learning, choice and more choice, and a large variety of courses which depart significantly from traditional curriculum, will make MOOC like courses prosper in K-12. It is certainly fits the top 20% of the students who can learn by themselves, are looking to expand their opportunities, etc. And 20% is a significant number.- guyl guyl Apr 24, 2016
  • We have some exciting opportunities now available for teachers across Australia, thanks to the wonderful work of the CSER (Computer Science and Education Resarch) team at the University of Adelaide. In 2015 the team lead by Assoc. Professor Katrina Falkner and Dr Rebecca Vivian developed a MOOC for teachers wishing to become familiar and proficient with the newly endorsed Australian Technologies curriculum The MOOC that was developed prompted the Australian government to provide $6.9 million dollars (AUS) to further develop thie MOOC for teachers across the nation.The MOOC is freely available to teachers not only in Australia but overseas and fully explores Digital Technologies within the collaborative online enviroinment of a Google community - peter.lelong peter.lelong Apr 24, 2016 - davidwdeeds davidwdeeds Apr 25, 2016

(2) What themes are missing from the above description that you think are important?

  • How will MOOCs evolve into an even more important tool in the K-12 classroom? I think we will see MOOCs treated as a new type of textbook, which will integrate not only text, but also videos, interactive activities and game-like simulations. There is also a move towards "digital dormitories," where in content from existing MOOC courses will be aggregated together, allowing teachers to cull content from various MOOCs. acarter- acarter acarter Apr 28, 2016

(3) What do you see as the potential impact of this technology on teaching, learning, or creative inquiry?

  • - kevin-johnson kevin-johnson Mar 31, 2016This has great potential, but mostly for older kids - principally high school -who have the maturity for independent learning, and already a good command of English, solid study habits and the support of a teacher or parent-instructor.

  • Online and Blended Learning as was defined by Michael Horn and Heather Staker is matured now hence will proliferate in the next few years and will help to redesign the organization of learning in schools, mostly middle schools and high schools. There are much more opportunities in the online learning arena with the development of edX, Coursera and other solutions that will open new markets in the K-12 system. Again, that will create a great impact on "Schooling" and educators will have to find creative solutions to the diversity of the students and finally "dump" the "one-size-fits-all" traditional education.- guyl guyl Apr 24, 2016
